Description Bowl turning and spindle turning are the two main branches of the craft of woodturning, so I offer half-day classes devoted to each. But if you would like to cover both topics in a single day, you can book this intensive one day class. You will begin the day by making a bowl, because it’s a good introduction to woodturning. Everyone loves a bowl! This part of the class is the same as my half-day bowl workshop. You will then go on to cover the basics of spindle turning. If you are ready after putting in some practice with the tools, you should be able to complete a simple project. If possible we shall give a little time to tool sharpening methods too, though not in such depth as on a separate sharpening class. Because this is a one to one class, it can be very flexible. Time is limited, but if you wish, you could start the day with a sharpening session, with the same content as my normal sharpening class, then make a bowl. The remaining time could be spent on spindle turning. You could decide for yourself which topics would be of most interest to you. Refreshments and a light lunch are provided. After payment, please contact me anytime to arrange the date. There is no set schedule for these classes, so just suggest some dates that would work for you. Because there isn’t time in one day for two people to do this class, I can only offer it to one person at a time. Here is a review of this class. To see more, follow the link above. I spent a very full and very rewarding day with Terry Vaughan in his workshop. We started with safety tips and learning the basics of tool sharpening. He also gave me guidance on the sharpening equipment that will suit me best when I return to Wagga Wagga (NSW, Australia). Terry trusted me with sharpening some of his tools through the day. I then had the opportunity to choose a blank for turning a bowl. Elm with character was my choice. Over the next three hours Terry patiently guided me through the correct tools to use at each stage and how to get the best results from them. This was of great benefit to me as I found I had not been using the tools correctly at home. Terry also guided me through the best methods for gradually refining the surface finish. The end result was a bowl I am very happy with. Unfortunately due to strict import rules going back to Australia, the bowl will remain in London. In the afternoon we covered the basics of spindle turning producing straight, convex and concave cuts again with the right tools and techniques. Terry was very patient and instructive throughout the day and I have gained much greater understanding of the right tools to use and the techniques required to get the best results from them. I am really pleased that I completed the day and the challenge now is to get home, buy some more sharpening equipment and a few more tools and apply what I have learned. Thanks again for your friendly and patient guidance Terry. Steve Related
