Description This bowl is one of a series that I turned from the wood of a big garden tree. Such trees often have nails driven into them over the years. The tree grows over the nails, enclosing them in the wood. Oak contains a lot of tannin, which reacts with the iron, making black stains that extend up the tree and are visible in this bowl. This iron/tannin reaction was in past times used to make ink. I turned the bowl before the wood dried. As it dried later, it warped and developed a leathery texture. I gave the bowl three small carved feet to ensure that it remains stable. It has two small bark inclusions, and a very organic, aged look. Related
