Spalted sycamore bowl, 17 cm

Description This bowl is quite chunky, but less so than the photo suggests. Its wide rim is undercut, so the bowl is lighter than it looks. The undercut rim on the inside makes the bowl easier to pick up too. The tree from which the wood came was heavily spalted, and had a lot of ripple figure. Spalting is the work of fungi that live in the wood before it dries. The rippled grain forms where the wood is under compression, often beneath a fork in the trunk. You can often see the ripple even on the outside of the bark of a living tree. The ripple and spalting give the bowl a lot of colour and visual interest. This is a striking piece. Related
