Description Plane has a prominent ray structure. The rays are part of the grain, and often visible in timbers such as quarter sawn oak. But they are only prominent when the wood is cut radially. A surface running out from the centre of the trunk shows them very clearly, especially in oak and plane, because the rays are then parallel to the surface. Quarter sawn plane is sometimes known as lacewood, and back in the day was prized for furniture making. A bowl doesn’t usually have a radially cut surface, so the rays are prominent only on small parts of the bowl. In this case, the wide rim and the bottom of the bowl do show the lacewood effect. There is some bark and small fissures at the rim. I turned this bowl with an undercut rim, making it easy to handle. Related
